Robert
Beltran at the London Expo
|
27/28.05.2006:
Robert Beltran was for the second time one of the guests at the last London Expo, a SciFi show and dealer fair, held in London. Wendy once again was so kind to write a report and to take some photos for the RAB! We are very grateful to our good friend Wendy :-) Links : |

We left home on Friday to drive to the Crowne Plaza Hotel at London Docklands – a horrible day – rain, rain, and more rain. As we approached London the sun came out and things got better and better!
We found the hotel with no problems, parked the car and went to reception to check in. I couldn’t believe the next few minutes. First of all Ethan Phillips, Robert Picardo and Robbie McNeill were all just in front of us checking in! Ethan looked and smiled as he moved over for us. Once we had checked in we moved over to the lift, just as Robert Beltran came into the hotel. In all the years I had stayed in the Crowne Plaza, I had never seen any one of the stars, then here they were 4 Voyager actors all together – I was in Heaven!
We had booked a table for dinner in the restaurant, which was empty except for some people at the next table – Yes you have guessed it, there they all were. Needless to say, we could hardly eat a thing! They all looked like they were enjoying their meal, catching up and having a good time. A few of the other actors came in, Richard Herd (Admiral Paris) and his wife and some of the actors from 24 who I didn’t recognise.
The next day we were up bright and early for Expo. Robert looked fabulous. He was wearing the usual black pants, white t-shirt, blue/grey sweater and black leather jacket. (I would LOVE to take him shopping!) He signed my poster, and I told him that Louie (his brother) had told me to pass on his love to Robert. He asked where I had seen Louie and I replied “The Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood two weeks earlier”. It was a Mother’s Day Brunch and Robert was back in Bakersfield visiting his mother. I let him listen to my telephone ring tone – odd I know, but it’s Robert singing ‘Ya Me Voy’ from Kiss me a Killer. He laughed and said “I like that, it’s a good song” then he asked my name – TWICE.
The Question and Answer was split between all four Voyager actors, and there were not as many questions for Robert alone. The answers to some of the questions were as follows:
Why didn’t he direct an episode?
Because there was so much work involved in directing and the days were very long
Jokes played whilst on set?
Chakotay and Tom Paris had a scene where they were drinking coffee. It became a competition to see who could drink the longest – it drove the director mad!
A hero to be looked up to?
Nelson Mandela (everyone clapped at this choice)
Favourite episode?
The ‘Gay’ episode with Harry Kim and Tom Paris (The Chute). Robert reckoned it could have been shot in half the time (ha ha)
Favourite Villain?
Definitely the Vidiians
Ethan Phillips said that he thought Chakotay had a charisma by-pass at the end of Series 1, but he thought Robert Beltran had the best butt in the series. Ethan Phillips is so funny – he should be a stand-up comedian.
The party on Saturday night was great – although maybe the couple of ‘Tequila Slammers’ helped things along. Walter Koenig was there, Robert Beltran made a short appearance, as did Bob Picardo and Robbie McNeill.
Expo was great this year – we saw Robbie, Bob Picardo, Connor Trineer and Richard Herd at breakfast each morning, although at no time did we speak to them unless they spoke to us first. I think once they are in the hotel, their own ‘private time’ should be respected. Hopefully they will remember us as the ladies who gave them ‘no hassle’..
